Self-esteem has a big part to play in our lives. It links to our self-worth, defines how we see ourselves, indicates how we handle challenges, and influences our interaction with the world around us.

Wondering how you can help your child feel empowered, capable, or valued? Well, it all starts with building on their self-esteem. When children learn to believe and trust themselves, they will be able to take on any challenge with resilience, experiment with new ideas, and develop positive relationships.

This growth allows them to conquer anything from academic success to mental health and their wellbeing, making them more prepared to thrive in later life. As we all know, life naturally comes with its setbacks and hurdles, but having a solid sense of self-worth can make us better equipped to handle it all and construction toys can be a fun way to help children develop these key skills!

All our blocks, bricks, and sets are perfect for instilling confidence in a playful, hands-on way.

Construction play

Construction toys have supported children’s learning for many years, specifically seen in schools and nurseries as this can help growth and development. Simple activities like counting bricks, stacking, or sorting coloured blocks can contribute to the way a child thinks. Brands like LEGO DUPLO and Mega Bloks have a wide range of toys to choose from that offer simple yet engaging play.

Building Confidence Block by Block

Have you watched your energetic toddler stack blocks only for them to come crashing down? And then, with a big grin, they start all over again?

This is the perfect life lesson to help children build resilience in a fun and engaging way. When children play with building blocks, they learn how to try, fail, and keep going! This can quickly start enhancing their confidence as they begin to see themselves as a fixer, constantly thinking “I can do it” or “I can fix this”.

Encouraging a child to solve simple problems can improve their self-esteem, as recommended by the NHS. Each time they build and rebuild a wobbly tower, they will overcome the emotions of frustration and begin to believe in their abilities more and more.

Confidence and Creativity

While some toys come with instructions, construction toys offer the freedom of creativity. One day your child will try to build the tallest tower, tomorrow they might try to build a castle and next, a spaceship. Toys like wooden activity sets let children create without limitations and encourages their imaginative skills to flourish.

When your child discovers what their creativity holds, it will naturally cause their self-esteem to skyrocket. According to the NHS, imagination helps children boost social skills and confidence, so support their oddly shaped creations as this leads to great development!

Boosting Cognitive Development

Building blocks for children can help enhance a child’s cognitive skills. Children are constantly making decisions when building such as, what they want to build, how is it going to look, where do they start and so on. This requires them to plan, be strategic, explore their spatial awareness and apply problem-solving skills.

Not only do they get to support the development of these key skills, but they also begin to work on their patience. Which many can agree, it is essential to understand that most things need to be done one step at a time.

Learning to Take Risks

One of the best benefits of construction toys, is encouraging risk-taking in a friendly and safe way. By either trying to build a higher tower or wanting to add something else to their projects, children begin to assess what they can or can’t do. With every successful idea, children will gain confidence and start having the courage to take on other small risks and discover creative solutions. This also gives them a sense of achievement as their faces light up when a risky (but successful) idea stands strong!

Learning to take (safe) risks is a big part of life, whether you’re afraid of riding bikes, swimming, or skating, the ability to take the risk and just get out there to begin learning usually starts from childhood. If we encourage this behaviour from young, as adults, we wouldn’t be as fearful in starting new hobbies or adventures as we would have developed the confidence and belief in ourselves.

In summary, construction toys can truly lead a child from blocks to bravery. They help build self-esteem, resilience, creativity and safe risk-taking just by allowing children to have fun with some imaginative play.

So, next time you step on one of their bricks or see a tower mid-collapse, just remember this is the exact toy that helps children build on their confidence. Discover more toys that can help your child’s learning skills journey, this is only the beginning!

Happy building.
