Ostriches are the largest living species of bird. They cannot fly, but can see and hear very well, so they can perceive predators such as lions from a distance
Ostriches can reach speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour and they can defend themselves by powerful kicks. Ostriches live in nomadic groups of up to fifty animals and often travel with other animals such as zebras or antelopes.
They usually feed on the nuts and seeds that fall off when they pick leaves and branches of trees, but they're not above locusts or the remains of other animals' leftovers. Since they have no teeth, they swallow small stones to promote their digestion. As long as they have vegetarian food available, they can survive for a long time without water. However, they like water and enjoy it in the hot African sun to take a bath.
Some ostriches are seventy years old.
